Printer Friendly Version (opens in new window)If the village pub is the focal centre of the community, then second to that in status is the village shop. Not only does it provide easy and convenient access to basic staple foods and commodities, it also provides a social meeting place for local residents, especially the elderly and less mobile.
Many small villages cannot sustain a shop as a stand alone business as there would not be enough trade.
However, combining a village shop with an existing business, i.e. a pub, can reduce overheads and running costs, whilst producing an extra small income that can make the pub business more sustainable. It can also help to cement the pub, and those running it, at the centre of the local community.
Community Lincs have developed guidance on how to open a village shop, for more information visit the Documents section of our website.
